Psalms 18:30 (NIV)
30 As for God, his way is perfect:
The LORD’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.
God's Perfect Way
Even this morning, as I listen to the devastating news of more deaths from the flooding around the Kerrville area, my heart aches for those who have suffered great loss. And in light of our passage this week, there can manifest a conundrum within our belief system that struggles to see God’s ways as perfect while the suffering continues and the search parties go out for another day. Yet, I am all in with God. I have put my trust in Him, and my faith is in His way that is perfect.

One reason we struggle with this concept is that our understanding of perfection is different from God’s perfection. Our concept of perfection is that which is without flaw. There is no part of perfection that allows deficiency. And in our mind, the ways of God that allow the pain and suffering we see every day does not seem perfect. There seems to be defects and flaws in God’s way. But what is perfect is perfect in the pursuit and ability to obtain its goal. A perfect fan intended to move an airplane is a propeller. It must propel the airplane. But a perfect fan to cool an office must be consistent to cool, but soft enough that it doesn’t blow papers off the desk. What determines the perfection of a thing is its aim.
In our human mind, our natural aim is comfort, ease, pleasure, or the greatest combination of these in all things. However, none of these will redeem our souls or retrieve us from the grips of Hell. God’s way is perfect for waking our souls from the dark night of personal desire, enticing us into a better way of self-sacrifice as we love God and our neighbors. God’s way is not perfect in the way the human mind would define perfect. But when we understand the natural aim of mankind leaves us without eternal life, then we can see the great imperfections of man’s way. And when we see God’s aim, the salvation of as many souls as possible, then we can see the perfection of His way, though it carries with it great pain and suffering. When we understand God’s aim and how His aim is higher than human aim, then we will praise Him even in the storm. He is using His wisdom and power to create the perfect balance of suffering and goodness to move the most number of souls to faith in Him for the salvation of their souls.
Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to Your aim. Let me see it higher than my own. Then, let Your aim become my own. Amen.
