Held Fast to the Vine

James 1:21

21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. (NIV)

The KJV translates today’s passage a bit differently. Rather than the phrase "the word planted in you," it says, "the engrafted word." While James is not directly referring to Jesus' teaching about the Vine, the imagery beautifully complements what Christ taught in John 15. Christ taught us that He is the Vine and we are the branches who must remain in Him. Grafting is a term most often used in horticulture when two plants are joined together to become one. A plant to be grafted is cut fresh, and the plant it is being grafted into is also cut fresh. The cuts are joined together with grafting tape so that, as the main plant grows, it feeds and nourishes the engrafted plant until they become one.

Our Christian journey is one of being grafted into the Lord. This process is accomplished by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. The Spirit uses the Word to conform us more and more to the likeness of Jesus Christ. But the key to spiritual grafting is represented by the binding of the two plants. We must stay connected to the Word and to the Spirit for the process of spiritual growth to continue. Sin does not remove us from Christ, but it does hinder our fellowship with Him and our spiritual growth.

Sometimes we wonder why we are not growing. The reality is that we are often staying connected to Christ loosely. We are near to Him, but we are not abiding deeply enough for the nourishment of the Vine to continually strengthen our souls. Sitting two plants beside one another will never facilitate grafting. They must be tightly connected.

The Holy Spirit and the Word of God are, in a sense, the spiritual tape that keeps us continually nourished by the Vine. But we also have agency. We must choose to slow down long enough to spend time with God in prayer and in His Word. We cannot graft ourselves into Him. Only the Spirit can accomplish that work. But presenting ourselves to the Spirit each day so that He can continue His transforming work in us is our choice. The more we let go of sin, the easier it becomes to take hold of the Spirit and the Word of God so that He can wrap us tightly in His embrace and feed our souls.

How closely connected am I to Christ today? Am I merely near Him, or am I intentionally abiding in His presence through prayer, His Word, and obedience? What is one thing I need to lay aside so that His life can flow more freely through me?

Read James 1:21 slowly several times. As you read the phrase, "humbly accept the word planted in you," ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where He desires to deepen your connection to Christ. Sit quietly before Him and allow His Word to take root more deeply in your heart.

Prayer Prompt

Father, thank You for giving me Your Word and Your Spirit. Continue Your work of shaping me into the likeness of Christ. Help me to lay aside every sin and distraction that hinders my fellowship with You. Teach me to abide in You each day so that Your life may flow freely through mine. In Jesus' name, amen.
