Keep Your Eyes on the Lord

Opening Scripture

Psalm 16:8 (NIV)

“I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

David, the psalmist, reveals the secret to emotional, mental, and spiritual stability: keeping our eyes on the Lord. But what does that truly mean—and how do we live it out?

Keep Your Eyes on the Lord in a Distracted World

light shining through the dark

We live in a dark world where trauma, drama, and wickedness are plastered across every screen we own. Our days are filled with images and messages designed to stir our emotions—from deep sadness to extreme anger, even hatred. The problem is not merely what exists in the world, but what we allow our eyes to dwell on.

Scripture teaches that our eyes are a window to the soul. What we repeatedly focus on shapes our inner life. When our attention is consumed by what is fearful, corrupt, or hopeless, our soul slowly erodes—often unnoticed—through endless doom scrolling and constant media exposure, not to mention our own troubles.

The Bible calls us to a different focus: to seek what is good, right, true, noble, and excellent. These qualities reflect the nature of God. As we intentionally look for these things, we begin to recognize God’s presence and activity all around us. Then, we are called not simply to notice Him, but to fix our eyes on Him, allowing His work and His ways to fill our minds.

God has also revealed Himself through His Word. In Scripture, He gives us precious promises through which we can participate in His divine nature. God is never anxious. His anger is never misdirected. His power is never diminished. When we make ourselves aware of His promises—and pair that awareness with an attentiveness to the good He is doing even now—we find our hearts becoming steady, more and more, in the same way our Lord is steady.

Keeping our eyes on the Lord means recognizing His faithfulness in the present and trusting His promises for the future.

As we learn to live this way, we begin to see His power more clearly. No matter how dark the world becomes, the enemy cannot fully extinguish God’s light. Light always breaks through. Training our minds to notice that light reminds us that God is unmoved, undefeated, and unchallenged.

This is what David means when he says, “With Him at my right hand…” In biblical times, the right hand symbolized strength and authority. When we fix our eyes on God and meditate on His unbreakable promises, His power fills our lives—and we discover the unshakable stability He provides.

Closing Prayer

Lord, help us keep our eyes fixed on You. Guard our hearts from distraction and fill our minds with what is good and true. Remind us of Your promises and strengthen us with Your presence, so we may live unshaken. Amen.
