Responding to the Death Seasons of Life

Isaiah 40:8

8 The grass withers and the flowers fall,

but the word of our God endures forever. ” (NIV)

Seasons change, but we cannot miss the reality of death seasons. The grass dies. The flowers die. There are seasons of death we must endure. Friendships die. Relationships die. Dreams, hopes, aspirations die. It is important to note that seasons change, and we do not have to endure death seasons forever. But this is only true if we respond to the death seasons in a way that moves us out of them and into the next season of life.

A flock of vultures and other birds are gathered in a dry, rocky desert landscape, with two vultures feeding on animal remains in the foreground and many more birds flying overhead in the hazy sky.

Psalm 23 gives us the analogy of us as sheep following the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. He brings us to green pastures and quiet waters. He restores and refreshes our souls. He gives new life. But the journey depicted in this psalm shows us following the Shepherd who will sometimes lead us into the valley of the shadow of death. And we must keep following Him to make it through to the other side.

Our passage this week reveals how we are to learn about God from nature. Grass and flowers die, but when they do, their organic matter is broken down and releases nutrients back into the soil for other plants.

When we experience seasons of death, the temptation is to turn inward and only concern ourselves with our pain and plight. But we are taught continuously in the Scripture that our journey is like the seed dying so that it can produce new life. Christ died in a way that produces new life in us. And if we are going to respond to our death seasons, we must continue to work to produce new life in others as we minister Christ to them. If we turn inward, we stay in the death season. But if in the death season, we continue to turn outward to others, giving them new life, the new season will come sooner rather than later.

Lord, when I suffer the death seasons, give me the discipline to lean on You to keep producing new life in others. Then, let me return to the green pastures and quiet waters.
