Psalm 119:107 107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, LORD, according to your word. (NIV)

Scripture reminds us that God is an ever-present help in times of trouble. There is never a moment when He is not with us, and His help is never withheld. Yet our perception, at times, is that He is not with us. It can often feel as though His help has not been given. But as we read our passage, the issue is not whether He is withholding His help, but how we access His help. His help comes according to His Word.
1 Corinthians 10:13 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (NIV)
These are the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the church in Corinth. Temptation often comes in the midst of suffering. In our suffering, we may be tempted to alleviate the pain in ungodly ways. This is what leads people toward sexual immorality, addiction, overeating, and more. But as Paul teaches, there is always a way to escape the temptation. What is this way? It is the way revealed in the Word of God.
The Bible teaches us the way of God, and the way of God is greater than any other. Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In His life and teaching, He shows us how to engage with the Word of God so that our obedience—through our thoughts, words, behavior, and attitude—leads us to victory over suffering and over temptation.
When it seems that God is not present or is refusing to help us, it often means there is some area of our obedience that is not aligned with His Word in one of these four areas. We must first align ourselves in obedience. We cannot forget that the Lord uses suffering to refine our spirit, so there will be times when He works on our heart and mind before delivering us from the circumstance that is causing our suffering. When we follow His Word, we are finding God's help in suffering and our lives will be preserved.
Prayer: Lord, when I suffer, help me remember that Your help is always available, and help me take hold of it according to Your Word. Amen.
