Psalm 73:25–26 25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (NIV)
God is our portion.
When we think of the word portion, we tend to think of a part of a whole. The word itself means allotment. That is its basic meaning. However, in biblical times, this word also signified a person’s inheritance. The inheritance of a child was a legal determination, not a future payment. The father was considered the manager of what belonged to his children, and the children were to obey and honor their father until he died. In this way, the father was making every decision about the family’s wealth based on what was best for his children, and the children honored him through their obedience.

When the psalmist says God is his portion, he is saying that God is his right now. God is not withholding Himself from us at all. If you are a believer, God is legally yours by the laws established by God. Not that He is a possession like a car or a boat, but He has given Himself to you completely.
In Scripture, the entire church is considered to be His firstborn. We are the body of Christ. We are made one with Christ. This is significant when we consider the Father’s inheritance. Jesus is called God’s only begotten Son. And though we are all His sons and daughters, we have been united with Christ, His only Son. If the Father has one Son, then all He has belongs to that one Son. That Son’s portion is everything. Because God has united us with Christ as His body, and Christ is the only Son of God in this sense, our portion includes everything. None of us has to share God with anyone. We all receive all of Him, all of the time.
When our flesh fails and our hearts dishonor God, we already possess all the righteousness of the Father. Our inheritance includes His perfection. His perfection surpasses our failures. We are forgiven. God does not leave us or forsake us. He stays. And we must have faith that He is our portion.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for uniting me with Your Son so that I might have all of You and find comfort even in my failures. Help my faith hold on to this truth. Amen.
