Hidden in the Rock Eternal: Trusting God’s Unbreakable Protection

Isaiah 26:4

4 Trust in the LORD forever,

for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal. (NIV)

He is the Rock eternal.

When the Lord brought Moses to see His glory, He knew it would be too much for Moses in his human form. The Lord put Moses into a cleft in the rock on the mountain. This is a small break or fissure in a rock just large enough for a person to slip into to hide or be protected. The original word denotes a confined space. It is a place where the rock surrounds a person. They are unseen and untouched, protected by the rock.

A believer standing safely in a glowing cleft of a massive rock as light radiates from above—symbolizing God’s eternal protection and strength.

When we learn to trust the Lord, His protection is comprehensive. It is not that we do not experience trouble. The Lord doesn’t want to protect us from all trouble. Troubles provide opportunities for us to increase our faith, thereby maximizing our maturity in Christ. But the rock does protect us from the enemy’s intended goal. What he hopes to do to us is impossible when we are hidden in the rock. To get to us, he must break the rock, and this rock is unbreakable. It is the rock eternal.

We are hidden from beneath. The enemy cannot ascend from the pits of Hell in a way that can destroy us or even knock us from our place in the cleft of the Rock eternal. We are hidden on all sides, guarded from what surrounds us each day. Be it sickness, betrayal, or any other earthly trial, we are secure. We are guarded from above so the Judgment Seat of Heaven cannot see us except as one hidden in the Rock eternal. We are forgiven and exempt from judgment. As we trust Him enough to respond in obedience to all these things, we are covered, protected, and secure.

So, why should we fear? Why should we let doubt creep into our hearts and minds? We have no reason to doubt our place with God. We have no reason to doubt His protection from any and everything designed to kill our souls. We have no reason to worry or stress. Our trust hides in the Rock eternal, and nothing can touch us there.

Prayer: Lord, let me never deceive myself into thinking I can protect myself from all these. You are my refuge and my Strong Tower. Amen.
