His Way Is Perfect: Finding Peace Through God’s Refining Love

Psalms 18:30 (NIV)
30 As for God, his way is perfect:
The LORD’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.
His way is perfect for salvation and sanctification.
Yesterday, we considered the aim of God that makes His way perfect. His aim, above all else, is the salvation of souls. He would do anything to ensure everyone is secure in eternal life. The Bible says He doesn’t want even a single soul to spend eternity in Hell (1 Timothy 2:3-4). However, although His aim is oriented toward the afterlife, His way is perfect in refining our souls for the present as well.
By continually drawing our eyes back to Him and our minds to consider the human experience from an eternal perspective through suffering and pain, the Spirit also works in us to make Him the object of our devotion and desire. The Bible reminds us that as we fix our eyes on Him, He is the author and perfecter of our faith. He leads us to salvation, then perfects us in His perfect love. We see His goodness and love in our valley experiences as much as our mountaintop experiences. We see how He has moved us even in the worst moments of our lives to a better place. We keep our eyes on Him as our Abba Father, who is also the Creator of all Things, the Judge who gives mercy, and the King over all forces of evil. Our souls rest in the peace of God as we gaze upon Him.
Knowing how He has lavished His love upon us motivates us to please Him more and more. As we see more of Him, His love and goodness, our desire to honor Him with our words, attitude, and behavior only increases. It’s only when we abandon the prism of eternity when evaluating our life that we lose our peace and joy. We become bitter, full of doubt. Our fear overwhelms. Without awareness of His help in our lives, we take on the responsibility of making everything in our lives good. This pressure is more than we can bear. The stress of carrying this weight decays our soul. And eventually, we see that we do not have the capacity to hold everything together—feelings of failure set in, followed by rebellious pursuits. But when our minds stay steadfast on Him, we find His perfect peace taking root more and more.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for using even the nightmares of this life to redirect my focus to You, so that I see everything in light of eternity and my spirit is being refined. Amen.
