Scars & Band-Aids

John 20:24-28

24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus appears after His resurrection in His glorified body. We might think a glorified body would be without any semblance of trauma. Yet, for Christ, the scars remain. His glorified body retained the scars, but why? It would have been easier to imagine a glorified body without any scars, blemishes, or any sign of this hard life. Yet, the scars are there. Thomas is able to put his finger upon them and feel Christ’s memory of pain and suffering. Perhaps the glory is His victory is marked by His scars.

Christian reflection on scars as testimony of God’s power

Though a perfect body, without scars, would indicate the erasure of Satan and his work, but then the victory might be forgotten. The scars remind us that the weapons of Hell did not prosper. His power was allowed for a moment, always controlled, and finally, it was broken and undone. Thomas could see and touch the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. There are people around us who need to see and touch the resurrection power of Christ through our scars. We can’t merely put a Band-Aid on the deep emotional and spiritual wounds. We need to be truly healed so they can touch the triumph of our risen Christ.

Prayer: Lord, help me to do what it takes for real and true healing that my testimony of scars would glorify Your victory over sin, death, and Hell. Amen.
