The Shepherd Who Stays—Even When We Wander

Scripture

Psalms 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

for his name’s sake. (NIV)

Devotional Reflection

For His name’s sake, He does all of this.

We may often wonder if God would do this for us. We are quite aware that we are the one sheep that keeps wandering away from the Shepherd. We are the stubborn one who just won’t listen. We go our own way. Over and over again, He must stop what He is doing to come and find us and carry us back because our curiosity distracts us with every rustling bush, distant sound, and greener patch.

It is true that if it was about us, the Shepherd may not be so patient with us. If he did come after us, he might not be so kind. But Jesus is the Good Shepherd who holds us in love, carries us tenderly back to where we need to be. It’s hard to grasp, but the difficulty is that we frame everything as if we are the center of it all, but it’s not about us primarily. It’s about Him, the Good Shepherd, and His reputation.

In Biblical times, a shepherd’s reputation and livelihood were based on him not losing sheep as he led them out to pasture. If a sheep never returned, it was not the sheep that was held accountable, but the shepherd. A good shepherd was expected to diligently provide for and protect his sheep. A negligent shepherd was condemned. David fought lions and bears for his sheep, but Jesus condemned the Pharisees as blind guides. They were to be the spiritual leaders of Israel, but they failed to shepherd the people as they should have.

When David, in today’s passage, writes that the Lord takes care of Him for His name’s sake, he is referring to this culture where a shepherd’s reputation and livelihood were tied to how faithfully he cared for and accounted for his sheep.

God has promised to take care of His sheep, even those of us who keep wandering away, getting stuck in far thickets of temptation, so that His name is glorified. It is only by His name that anyone can be saved. And giving up His own life to save even His most stubborn sheep makes His name known to every lost sheep. He is patient with us, continually leading us to better places despite our sin and rebellion so that every soul might know He is a God of mercy who will leave the ninety-nine to go after the one. That’s the kind of shepherd we have. It’s the kind of shepherd He must be that lost sheep might listen to His voice and run to Him. And because it’s about Him and His reputation, we never have to wonder if He might neglect us when we wander off. He will always come after us to bring us back to the green pastures and quiet waters.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being the Shepherd who never stops pursuing me. Even when I wander, You remain faithful. Help me to hear Your voice, trust Your leading, and stay close to You. Amen.
