The Voices That Drown You—or Give You Life

Proverbs 18:4

4 The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream. (NIV)

Devotional Reflection

We remember in our passage today that words carry the power of life and death. The old childhood chant that words will never hurt us is a farce. Words run deep. Our proverb today describes our words as deep waters.

Deep waters incapacitate us. We have nothing to stand on but our own strength, which will not last. The deeper the water, the farther we are from rest. We tread water and become exhausted. Deep waters can overtake us, stealing our breath, subduing our will to live until we surrender to the deep. Words linger in our minds, swallowing up our hearts and hope, rendering us helpless as if there is no rescue. But the wise...their words are like a rushing stream.

A stream presents no threat, only the refreshment of living water. It is a place of refuge and rest, helping us recover and strengthening us for the journey.

We must seek out the rushing streams of life—those who pour from their lips the words of God through the Holy Spirit. And we must be wary of those whose words do not carry the cool waters of renewal but the deep waters that envelop our thoughts until we lose ourselves in their opinions and ideas.

Wisdom is the work of God within us that skillfully makes everything more beautiful, like the touch of an unsurpassed artist. Wherever wisdom is present, God transforms what is ordinary into something beautiful. Our Lord makes everything beautiful in its time (Ecclesiastes 3:11), and we are called to sacrifice everything to gain wisdom so our words refresh the soul with beauty, love, and peace. Then God will cause our words to flow with the living water of His Spirit so our conversations pour into others a more beautiful life.

• Are my words becoming deep waters that weigh people down or a rushing stream that refreshes their souls?

• Whose voices am I allowing to shape my thoughts—the voices of wisdom or the voices that slowly pull me beneath the surface?

• What words can I speak today that will bring beauty, peace, and life to someone else?

Lectio Divina

Read Proverbs 18:4 slowly several times.

Picture two scenes as you meditate on the verse: dark, overwhelming deep waters and a clear, rushing stream. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal which image best describes your words and the voices you have allowed to influence your heart. Invite Him to make your speech a fountain of wisdom that refreshes everyone you encounter.

Prayer Prompt

Father, thank You for the incredible gift of words. Fill me with Your wisdom and Your Spirit so that my words become a rushing stream of life to everyone around me. Guard my heart from voices that pull me into deep waters, and teach me to listen to those who speak Your truth. Make my life and my words beautiful for Your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
