The Word of God Is Alive: Encountering Scripture Through the Holy Spirit

As the Holy Spirit inspires our passage this week, He transcends our understanding of the written word. When we read, we are often touched on a deep level, but those words have been written from the heart of someone who is not there. But imagine how much more we might take from a book if we could sit down with the author and learn all of His thoughts behind every word and phrase. To know why He chose a certain way to say something or a certain word to use would enlighten us to a higher level. This is what the Bible is. We sit, not only with the words written and inspired by the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit has embodied Himself into these words and speaks to us mystically as we read and meditate over these words. The Word of God is alive.

the Word of God

Certainly we can read the words on paper and ignore the Holy Spirit. The devil himself quoted Scripture. He knew the finite expression of language, but ignored the transcendent presence of God within. What a waste to have the Word of God and ignore the author.

All life is derived from God, but not all life is the same. Animals live in a lower state. We have been made lower than the angels for now, but will one day rise above them. In fact, the Scripture reminds us that we will one day judge the angels (1 Corinthians 6:2-3). The Bible is alive, but it is alive with the highest realm of life. When we interact with Scripture in the way it subscribes, our spirit is quickened to a higher level of life. We not only learn the practical way to live higher, we are filled with the power of God through the Holy Spirit to have the discipline it takes to live at this level. We are literally being quickened to life. The Word of God is alive.

Prayer: Lord, give me a hunger for Your Word to engage it in Your Presence by Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
