Lamentations 3:24
24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion;therefore I will wait for him.” (NIV)
⠀The word “portion” refers to a person’s inheritance. In Biblical times, the inheritance belonged to the father and the child simultaneously until the father died. It was not like it is in our society, where the inheritance does not belong to the child until the parent has passed. The inheritance belonged to the child from the moment he was born.
⠀God is our inheritance. He is what we have received, and He is everything. There is not one thing that we need that does not come from Him. Every good and perfect gift, the Bible says, has come down from the Father of Heavenly Lights. When we have God, we have all that we need. In Him, we are rich in patience. We are rich in wisdom. We are rich in power. All that He is belongs to us.

⠀But He is not a piece of land to be developed. He is not a wad of cash to be used as we wish. He is the Lord. Though He belongs to us, He belongs to us in the sense that He is our God, our Father, the Lover of our souls. And all that we could ever need is in Him and with Him. But He is not a genie, ready to move upon our every wish. Sometimes, we have to wait for Him.
⠀There may be other imposters that would claim to be able to give us what He can give us, but in reality, an imposter can only give a pretender’s gift. What an imposter claims to give will always fall far short of what is truly needed or promised. What an imposter purports to give is always so much less than what was given. But when the Lord gives, He gives perfectly and abundantly.
⠀His method of giving to us is through our obedience to Him. As we obey, we position ourselves to receive more and more. But again, He is not the lottery. He is the inheritance that loves us deeply, so He only gives to us what is good for us. At times, what we need is to learn patience more than the things we want. When we do things God’s way, because His first priority is to form our spirit to His own, we may never receive what we want, or it may take a long time. This does not mean He is withholding from us in a negative sense, but that He is shaping us to fully receive Him. Our inheritance is not one thing or another, but the whole of His presence. At times, He may need to withhold one thing to help us take hold of Him in His entirety.
⠀When we understand what it means for the Lord to be our “portion,” we begin to realize that waiting is not passive, but an active trust in His sufficiency and timing. When we understand what it means to experience the whole measure of who He is, we are more willing to do things His way and to wait for what we want, knowing we already have Him.
Prayer
Lord, You are my portion. Teach me to trust You and to wait on You, knowing You are enough. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
