When Fear Overwhelms: Trusting the God Who Commands the Storms

Job 37:5–6

5 God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; He does great things beyond our understanding. 6 He says to the snow, “Fall on the earth,” and to the rain shower, “Be a mighty downpour.” (NIV)

Fear is a horrible thing. It stirs our anxiety and triggers the psychological response of fight or flight. Fear makes us combative and difficult. Our attention remains fixed on what we fear, causing us to neglect the concerns and needs of others. When fear has already taken root, even the smallest addition to what we already feel can set us off. We will either fight with anyone or run away. Sometimes we run physically; other times, we run emotionally. No matter how we fight, flee, or escape, fear will destroy our lives. But God has given us many reasons not to be afraid.

Powerful storm with dark clouds and rain, symbolizing fear and life’s challenges, with sunlight breaking through representing God’s protection and calming presence

He is the God whose voice shakes the heavens. He commands the rain and the snow. Torrential downpours have the power to wipe out entire cities, yet even these powerful storms submit to the voice of God. Every rainstorm, snowfall, flood, and blizzard speaks to the magnificence of our God. With one word, Christ stopped the wind and the rain. The wind did not push back; the rain did not rebel. They fell into place in absolute obedience to their Creator. How big is our God!

It is our understanding—and our ability to recall—the glory of God as the Creator of all things, far beyond our comprehension, that calms our fears. He is God, but He is also our Abba Father.

Even a bad parent will jump into action to rescue his children. How much more will a good parent do so? And how much more will our Lord do this for His children? He loves us more than any parent ever could, and in Him lies the power to stop wind and rain with a single word. The God who commands each raindrop and every snowflake holds our lives in His hands. With storms in His firm grip, He says to us, “Fear not, for I am with you.”

Prayer: Lord, help my eyes to see and my mind to remember Your absolute power over everything, and Your pure, unchanging love for me and my family. Wash away my fear. Amen.
