Why God Lets Difficult Seasons Last

Isaiah 40:8
8 The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever. ”
Anyone who has endured a long, difficult season will ask God, “Why?” We wonder why He allows certain hardships to come and why He allows them to continue for so long. It is a difficult question for us. In times like this, many will question God’s love for them. Some may even question God’s existence. It is easy to become bitter or doubtful because our prayers seem to go unanswered. But God has a purpose.

The Lord warns us that we will be tempted to forget Him in the pleasant seasons of good. Our design, being made in the image of God, has given us many natural traits fully capable of giving some type of fulfillment and provision. In the end, they fall short without God. But our intellect, charisma, talent, friends, money, and all the rest are enough to tempt us to put our trust in them. The longer the seasons where we sense plenty of these natural traits and resources, the greater the temptation to forget that only God can truly satisfy our souls. To remind us, God lets the seasons change. The new life of spring turns to the burning heat of Summer. We don’t enjoy this, but without the sweltering Summer, the rejuvenating Spring would become a trap for our souls. We don’t always like the changing seasons, but thank God for them.
Prayer: Lord, when I am despising a harsh season, remind me that I need these to help me hold on to You. Amen.
